Car charger plugged in first for portable charger

Asked by Guru9Q6CCQ Mar 12, 2022 at 09:22 PM about the 2014 Honda Civic EX-L with Navigation

Question type: General

I set up a 3 AMP portable charger charger to my car, but I accidently plugged
in the car charger first , and then set up the clamps.  And when I
disconnected the clamps, the charger was still on too. I did positive first and
then negative when I set up the clamps, and then negative to positive when I
disconnected the clamps? Is that bad?

Make sure the charger is off when you hook up. Everything else is fine in what you listed. Having the charger ON and if the clamps touched on another by accident, you can create a spark.

When a batt is charging it can give off hydrogen gas , remember the hindenburg ? So they say don't plug in till the clamps are on and don't remove clamps till it's unplugged . Just a safety thing so no one blows up , like smoking around gasoline . But people still do it .

Yup, you're good. Sounds like you did almost everything correctly. It's definitely a safety concern that the spark from the powered up charger clamps can, in some cases, cause an explosion when clamping to or removing the charger clamps from the battery. Just remember for next time. Hope that helps! Jim
