99 GMC Jimmy worth rebuilding

Asked by Novaspawn Apr 06, 2016 at 01:25 PM about the 1999 GMC Jimmy 4 Dr SLT SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I found a 99 GMC Jimmy I can get for about $400with 162kmi. It's an SLT
package with all the bells and whistle, but the transmission slips bad. I can
get the transmission rebuilt for a decent price. I'm looking to make a 40mi
drive every day for work with it. I do most of the work on my vehicles
myself, I did all the work on my cheyenne 3500, however I've never
touched a transmission so I'll need to go to a shop.

I'm just worried I'll fix the trans then need to rebuild the engine. How do
jimmys generally hold up? It is a 4.3l 6cyl engine. I just need to know if they
are worth sinking some money into it'll probably cost me around 2,000 to
be happy with it. I feel like it's worth rebuilding rather then buying a working
old vehicle for 2,000 however I'm undecided and would appreciate some
input from more experienced owners.

It will all boil down to how was it serviced by the previous owner(s). If it was well maintained it might get you by, if it wasn't well maintained it could be a money pit.
