2002 Ford Ranger XLT acceleration issues

NO acceleration on climbing a hill. No acceleration when attempting to pass or
speed up quickly.

What would be the first item to check?

Engine trouble codes. The next thing might be new spark plugs. After that you could check the catalytic converter.
