2015 Forester Oil Consumption

I'm a newcomer to this forum. I recently ordered a 2015 Subaru Forester Limited. A few days ago I first heard about the class-action suit regarding oil consumption. I did some research, then called my dealer. He was "not aware" of the suit and was not happy about my questions. I postponed my order. I have a 2004 Forester and love it. I don't want to walk away from Subaru, but I'm concerned. Any suggestions?

I'm not familiar with any of it but that's why I suggest people look around on NASIOC or www.subaruforester.org to see if anything is going on in that regard. I'm going to try to stick with 03 & 04. I think 04 or 05 was the last year they put the self diagnostic ABS plug up under the dash but I also avoided the head gasket issues of the earlier makes. Anyway, I can't provide much for you on the newer ones.

Have a 2015 Forester, my 4th Forester. I have had nothing but good luck(knock on wood). I just change the oil, only 0w30 synthetic and rotate tires.

My 2015 Forester, manual transmission started using oil within the first 1500 miles. Since then I have consistently added a quart every 1200-1500 miles. i have had two oil consumption tests and the dealer says its within the manufacturer's specs. It's quite frustrating and worries me that ultimately it will cause engine damage. Although I love every other aspect of the car, I would not recommend it.

idk.. I would think as long as you monitor it and keep it above low and don't let the oil pump suck air then you won't cause any damage. Is that convenient? Absolutely not. It just hit me.. is this sort of thing not an issue to the environment / emissions / EPA?

I can tell you first hand that not all 2015 Subarus are good. Mine uses at least a quart per thousand miles and I only have 8,000 miles on the car.

I would ad that Subaru says oil consumption should be 1/3 of a quart per 1,200 miles or a quart every 3,600. The proper way to check the oil level per my dealer is to park on a flat surface and wait exactly 5 minutes before checking the oil level. Waiting until it is cold will cause a false high reading which may explain complaints about dealers over filling cars.

Oh and my car does have a 6 speed transmission.

After a new engine was installed I now have 3,000 miles on it and it has used 1/3 quart which works out to a quart in 9,000 miles. We shall see how it does once it is broken in.

Thanks to everyone for all the information. Update on the 2014 consumption problems. I have finally failed an oil consumption test and had the short block replaced in my 2014 Forester. (Only 1000 miles but so far, so good.) Please take heed if you have a similar problem...you will need to visually verify the level of the oil with the dealer before leaving the appointment starting the consumption test. I believe the size of the oil tank in the Forester is 5.5 quarts which, if 5.5 quarts are added, it puts the level of the oil over the "full" mark on the dipstick. Therefore you will likely never fail the consumption test unless you visually verify that the oil level is only to the full mark on the dipstick. (In my experience, 5 quarts brings you to the full mark.)

I have a 2014 forester. It kept passing the oil consumption test (1200 miles). But at 1500 i had to add a quart. A customer at the dealer overheard my problem and told me to get it on the freeway at about 3000 rpms and it will burn more oil. It failed oil consumptiin test. at 900 miles it was a quart low, now short block being replaced. Such a hassle. Wish i would have researched more before purchasing certified used vehicle that dealer said they werent aware it had problem..

My 2015 manual transmission Forester is in line for a short block replacement. My dealer has been fantastic so far in starting the oil consumption survey and then lining up the replacement with Subaru. I am just waiting for the 4 in line before me to be completed so they can start work on mine. It was going through a quart of full synthetic in 1500 miles.

Don't let them blame the transmission - it is the engine. Third time I got a good one.

The oil consumption test standard is 1/3 of a quart in 1,200 miles, NOT one quart.

I purchased a Forester 2015 Automatic at the end of 2014. Unfortunately, from that time I have added a Quart of oil for every 2000 miles. I took the car for oil consumption test to the dealer. They made an oil change and asked me to take it back to their shop when oil engine light comes on. Since it came up around 2000 miles, the dealer did not accept any repair or replacement, because it was more than 1200 miles! The consumption test looks for loss of a quarter of oil at or before 1200 miles.

I have a 15 Forrester. I had a new block put in 30k miles ago because of consumption. I'm not going through the same thing, saying the consumption falls within their specs (a quart per 2000 miles). They won't warranty the replacement because the block replacement was "complimentary ."

I have a 2016 Forester that has the oil consumption problem. I have it at a dealership, who is hopefully going to go to bat for me at Subaru of America. If that fails, I will be taking this to Subaru of America in New Jersey and am open to starting a second class action lawsuit. Please post your comments under the search question "Forrester oil consumption" so we can begin to compile a list of those customer still affected by a problem that has NOT been fixed. A comprehensive list will also help customer defend the argument that they have an oil problem with dealerships.

My 2015 Subaru Forester Manual Transmission has had oil consumption problems since I bought it brand new in September 2014. I've consistently had to add a quart every 1,800- 2000 miles. According to the dealer, each oil consumption test I have had, falls within normal levels for 1,200. I keep telling them over and over, that I don't receive warning until 1,800 miles and the test is useless. I have a gold level warranty and have 91,800 miles. The warranty is set to expire at 100,000. My last oil change was at 89,805. My oil warning light has come on again after only 1,995 miles. My dipstick is dry. I want to add oil so I don't seize the engine but I want take it to the dealer and prove what is going on. Add me to whatever list you create. I'm thisclose to never buying another Subaru AND telling people about my bad experiences.
