2015 Chevrolet Traverse Misfiring

Asked by Kmontgomery06 Oct 06, 2017 at 02:28 PM about the 2015 Chevrolet Traverse LTZ AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

We have a 2015 Chevrolet Traverse.  In July, the
check engine light came on and was flashing, no
other issues.  Dealer said it was misfiring, didn't
know why.  Had us do some sort of maintenance
that cost around $150 and said if it happened again
it was a more serious issue.
Yesterday, we were driving on the highway and it
started shaking and bogging as if it wasn't getting
enough gas.  The traction control light came on and
the check engine light was flashing.  We were
worried it wasn't going to make it off the highway.
We happened to be in a construction zone with no
shoulder and had a newborn in and toddler in the
car.  When we did get out, we noticed an odor.  My
husband was able to drive it to dealer without issue.
Check engine light was off, but traction control light
was still on.  They say cylinder 2 shows history of
misfire, but have no reason for it and thus have
nothing to fix, "bc they can't replicate the issue."
There's obviously something wrong with the car and
I don't feel comfortable driving my 2 young children
around.  We're planning to take it to a different
mechanic this weekend and pay to have it looked at
to see if they come up with something different.
Advice?  Feels like the dealer is putting us off to
prevent paying to fix it since it's still under warranty.

Seems like it is misfiring because of spark plugs or the spark plug connectors

You are probably correct about the dealer. They would do this. Misfires can be a host of things. How many miles? Bad wires, bad plugs, bad coil, too much gas, not enough gas, too much air, not enough air, wiring issue and more. With the check engine light off, they can say they cannot get a code but they can get a pending or historical code. It is easier to diagnose when issue is happening but they can still look at live data values and compare to an efficiently operating vehicle. There are also simple hardware checks that could possibly find the issue. Example the spark plug. And the coil.

Many cars today have other lights that come on when the check engine light comes on. This is not a traction control issue. My car did this 50K ago and i didn’t even consider the traction issue. It is how the pcm is programmed. This is only a misfire issue. Fix it and all your lights will disappear. Look it up online and you will see that these light come on together.

When the car starts shuttering and acts like it has no power- because the computer has put the car in safe mode.. misfire could be caused by several things- change the plugs and wires first. Still misfires move coil packs around to check if it’s a coil pack. Still misfires on the same cylinder- check the fuel injectors..
