What is the correct tire size for my Legacy?

The Legacy I am buying has 17inch tires but when
I check online it says the car takes 18inch tires. Is
this an issue? I plan to buy winter tires and rims,
so should I stick with 17inch to keep it
consistent?

You cannot install 17" tires on 18" wheels.

The 225/55R17 are GENERALLY better in snow/ice than equiv 225/50R18, and give deeper pothole protection. Regardless, I w wouldn't worry about it. The 18's are a bit overkill on the fairly soft Legacy chassis. 225/55R17 is a great all-around size that's worked extremely well on older OBs before they got too tall.
