2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee center controls not working, help!
Asked by Tim Jun 20, 2015 at 12:26 PM about the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Altitude 4WD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
The touch screen works fine, but the controls & knobs below do not work/respond
(Volume, browse, A/C, etc...). Any body have a clue as to why this would just stop
working? Hoping for a quick fix, supposed to be 90 degrees today!

Se Photo : Anything below the screen is not responding/functioning. I'm lost when it comes to fixing stuff myself, just looking for some insight. Jeep dealer said it could be a bunch of different things since vehicles are over computerized these days. I just want my A/C to work!
I have a 2015 Grand Cherokee SRT and I had the same issue happen last week. I could still do the Nav/AC/radio tune/etc on the touch screen, but no manual buttons worked except the hazard light button. I assumed it was a fuse. I pulled out the fuse and it was fine. I put the fuse back in and everything worked after that. So I have no clue. This was after starting/restarting the vehicle as well. Maybe the fuse was loose, but not sure. Hope you found out what was up!

Same story with my Grand Cherokee as described by Jim. I pulled the fuse F49 (ICS/Climate control; it was fine) out and put it in and it started working again. I think its a cold reset of the integrated control system, by pulling the fuse one disconnects it from power, same effect would be done with disconnecting it from the battery and have a cold reset right there. The whole ICS / electronics section of the Jeep seems not very software robust in my opinion.
I had the same problem. Touchscreen worked, steering wheel controls worked, console knobs and buttons did not. Pulled fuse F49 as described above, fuse was fine, reseated the fuse and everything worked again. Thank you Jim.
Right on. I haven't had the problem since and loving the Jeep more and more (or I should say my wife is...it's hers). :)

Hopefully somebody will still read this thread!...But I have a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. Had the same problem just occur, all buttons on steering wheel and touchscreen work fine except for the center controls underneath the touchscreen. Tried this fix above (pulling and putting back the F49 fuse) and had no success. Still have the same condition. The fuse was also fine as in everybody else's situation. Any other ideas?? Thanks.

I have a 2015 JGC SRT with 36450 miles. Just yesterday the touchscreen went black as i was driving. the radio remained on, and the screen booted fine when i stopped to restart. Jeep said there's nothing they can do unless it can be replicated, so i sent them pictures and they noted that this could be related to an issue i had a couple weeks ago when the seat memory stopped working altogether. I'm now out of warranty, and told it is up to Chrysler if this will be covered if/when it comes up again - which usually it will once it starts. Love the car, hope it holds up.

Happened to my 2014 Grand Cherokee. My buttons quit working and the Eco Mode light was flashing rapidly. I disconnected the battery and the problem seems to have gone away.
Checked fuses , found nothing , and when people say disconnect the battery does that mean both terminals or just the positive side
FrankGunter answered 7 years ago
Just disconnect one side, that will do the job.

Hi I had this problem too, all the button is not working temporarily and randomly, I tried replace Fuse49 and replaced the whole central stack but problem still remain, anyone know what is going on?
Had the same problem 49 fuse should work but if it does not just disconnect the red positive wire from the battery for about 2 to 3 minutes
2015 Grand Cherokee Limited, 2wd, 6 cylinder, 38,000 miles. Had the same issue, nothing below the screen was working although the AC was blowing cold air. Pulled fuse F47 then put it back in and boom....everything worked again. Thank you very much for the advise.
Same problem, remove fuse F49 and placed it back in. Wait 2 minuets. Everything fixed. Thanks all.

THANK YOU GOOD PEOPLE OF THE INTERNET!!!!!!!!!!!! Love it the we are able to help each other. this totally solved the problem of my 2015 jeep grand cherokee!!
I had the same problem. Touch screen worked fine, so I had to use it for ll of my controls. The buttons below the touch screen didn't work. In addition, the seat heaters would not come on due to the buttons not working. I pulled the F49 fuse...it was fine...put it back in after a couple of minutes. All of the button controls below the screen now work. The seat heaters work too! Thanks everyone for the advice.
2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited- Center control knobs / Heated Steering Wheel and Heated Seats NOT WORKING! The Touch Screen works fine, but the center control knobs underneath the touch screen are not working. This is also causing the heated seats/heated steering wheel functions not to work. I cannot not use the center knobs to adjust the Radio volume, Eco mode, Nav system, A/C, Heat, Auto control, etc.; this has happened three times. The first time was when the Jeep was fairly new. The second time, it was diagnosed as an issued with the “center stack”...the dealership reset the “center stack” and told me they could not guarantee that it would not go out again, so I had the whole “center stack” part replaced at a cost of almost $700.00. Guess what, less than two weeks later, the center control knobs/heated seats/heated steering wheel are not working again!! Now, i want to know what is the root cause of the “center stack” dying and needing to be reset. I called Chrysler customer service and report the problem. There is no “Recall” for this issue. I think this is a problem Chrysler need to investigate…$700 is a lot of money. I plan not to buy another vehicle for a few years and I cannot imagine having to keep paying money over and over again for the same issued. In the meantime, I will try the list fix-it suggestions.
Awesome! thanks guys! replugging the fuse F49 also fix my 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I guess it is a temporary workaround. Seems the issue is so common. Hope Chrysler call back for this. I lives in WA where temp is above 32.
Thank you all so much for your responses. I was getting ready to take it to the dealership and they were going to charge me 149.84 for diagnostic.
I have a 2014 jgc with 8.4 Nav etc. After getting it back from an interior clean, the info screen is locked on 'controls'. We have touched everything and nothing seems to help. We disconnected the battery, but only for about 30 seconds. It didn't help. Anyone one else has this problem?
I have a 2015 JGC SRT and i have had the radio blk out on me button still functional, still under warranty radio has been swapped out by dealer 3 times this is my thirdr so far so good, issue were touch screen not responding , screen blk out when put in reverse.
I'm having this issue right now after doing the most recent update scheduled for February of 2018. It keeps saying could not install bolo. Every time I try to reinstall this update, it keeps giving me this issue. I've tried to disconnect the battery post on the negative side and that didn't work. I tried doing the soft reset which is holding the volume and the tune button, that didn't work. I've even pulled fuse F 49 and that didn't work. I'm stuck and I need help. Has anybody else run into this issue?
I have the similar issue screen is blacked out no control of touch screen features at all. Radio is dead with no camera. I have tried soft reset to no avail. Also pulling the fuse has not worked. Uconnect does not recognize my Vin number either 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I do have an appt with the dealership to service other recalls. I have only had it for 3 months. I love Jeeps but this is my second one with electronic problems. Starting to rethink my loyalty. Any other suggestions out there
I have the issue where the screen in blank and not responsive. Cannot use any of the climate controls below the screen. After 3-5 minutes it will finally come back on and work fine. It is VERY random when it happens. Weird details - it resets all my climate controls (AC Temp) back to 75 but does not reset any radio stations preprogrammed. Anyone have a clue on this one?
GuruWGLP1, I'm having the exact same issues you described with my 2014 GC summit. Please post the "fix" if you ever find out! Thank you!
Same issue I think as GuruWGLP1, delay in screen, a/c, radio coming on. It's random, not every time vehicle is started. Any ideas short of the dealer service dept? My mechanic won't attempt newer vehicles w/all these electronic features. My 2008 Jeep GC never gave me a problem, just normal components need to be replaced over time. This one... 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a disappointment. Two noises- one near speedometer, and one in panel in front of driver door (dealer pulled dash and panel twice; 1st time the snap for air bag was not connected. But rattle is still there after connecting it). Oh and a message appears on control panel to have phone serviced by dealer. Took it to dealer, and they don't know what the problem is. Said to take a photo of it while I'm driving!
I have a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited. My radio also randomly won't load. Air blows hot, nothing works. After a few minutes, it comes back on, but my compass never shows the right direction. Took it to a dealer. They said they have to drop the head liner to find the problem, $250 just to do that. They said it could be antenna, but they think it's the radio and it's $2,000 to replace it. Not good
I went to the dealer for ANOTHER recall, and at the same time asked them to check the control panel. They did a diagnstic test, but said it's probably a "soft code" and it won't replicate unless the malfunction occurs while it's being tested. I asked them what to do... they said try to bring it in when the malfunction occurs... kind of difficult when the malfunction only occurs for a couple minutes, and I live over an hour from the dealership. So, I suppose unless I hire a mechanic to "shadow" me day by day (sarcastic) I wait for something to quit working altogether. Same thing with the screen showing a notice that the phone feature needs to be serviced... dealer told me they couldn't replicate it, and to take that photo or bring it in when it happens... less than a minute in duration!
I have a 2014 GC and been having the same issues for a while now when I first got the vehicle they replaced the radio but this “new” one if they ever replaced it does the same thing I took it back but since it’s out of warranty they want to charge me over $600 to replace it and “maybe” that will work, as of right now I don’t have any issues with it except when it’s hot outside and it sits in direct sunlight maybe there’s a component that’s affected by the heat
Not the exact same issue but this is what I've experienced.... I have a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT, purchased in 11/15. It's had it's share of issues surrounding the infotainment / Uconnect system. The most annoying and troublesome one is that the AC / climate control settings are not retained after the Jeep is turned off more than a few minutes. For example, AC on SYNC with passenger, recirculate set on 68 when driving will revert back to OFF when restarted, at default 72 non SYNC split control. So I must turn the AC on, adjust the temp, set to SYNC (or not) and do this each time the Jeep is started. This issue is slightly sporadic as it happens only about 90% of the time. When stopping for gas or a quick stop (less than 5 minutes), usually retention is held. Every once in a while, after several hours it is held but it's like 1% of the time. It's a very annoying issue, who wants to reset the A/C every time you get in the vehicle. Just want to get his resolved. I'm outside Houston so with 105 degree summer temps and 90% humidity, we need our AC to work and work right. It has done this since I purchased it in 2015. I’ve been to 4 dealers in Houston and they all claim they’ve never seen this issue or how to fix it. One opened a STAR case on it but could not find an exact SRT to troubleshoot along side of mine so they gave up and said they could not proceed. They also flashed it with a software update which did not change or help the issue. Another stated that they worked with STAR / FCA engineering and stated a blown fuse (F49) was the culprit. I could not understand how a blown fuse (has continuity or does not have continuity) would allow the system to retain settings every great once in a while. This did not solve the problem either as the replaced fuse did not help anything. I have never encountered a forum or online posting of any other Jeep owner having this issue so I'm extremely frustrated that I can't find a solution. I thought maybe you guys may have seen or heard something or had some diagnostic knowledge. Thanks in advance for your time to any of those who reply.
I have a 2015 Durango SXT. The touch screen works fine, but the controls & knobs below do not working or responding. Does anyone knows what fuse it would be relate to? I know its F49 for Cherokees since everyone stated that in the chat. But nothing for Durangos. Does anyone has any idea?
GuruWGLP1, I don't have the answer, but this is the EXACT same thing that happens to me- -and it happens very seldomly but when it does, it's a pain esp now in Houston where it's 100+ degrees! 2015 JGC SRT, Red Vapor Edition, 40,000 mi.
I am also having the same issue as GuruWGLP all of sudden. I have 2014 JGC Limited with 92,000 miles. Fine other than this frustrating issue, plus NAV won't calibrate. Any suggested fixes? Of course, it is out of warranty. Thanks.
No answer to fix it. But, I have noticed that my touch screen display seems to go out & have delay time to show when starting vehicle....when the weather is hot/vehicle parked in sun. Any ideas? I tried pulling the fuse but that didn't make a difference.
GuruWGLP1- That is EXACTLY what happens in mine (2015 JGC SRT Red Vapor, 40k mi) except my channel memory doesn't erase. Saw a youtube clip about making sure the vacuum line is firmly attached and while I'm not certain I found it, every other electrical connector I could reach was wiggled and firmly seated again! Pulled F49 fuse and replaced; positive pole battery line removed and replaced....I read about doing a "hard (soft?) reset" by holding the volume and tune buttons but nothing happened after more than 60secs. Crossing fingers that the other works. Very tough to analyize b/c it happens so infrequently.
thanks , yea I removed F49 put that back and console lit up cool thanks folks
My 2015 Grand Cherokee screen of controls went out completely. After a couple of restarting, it came back. Phone did not work (UConnect) so asked dealer to check it out. They tried to install the latest "update." After that, the whole thing went out, and we have no controls. The whole touch screen is out, and they are telling me to pay $2,200.00 to replace the whole system in dash. Its the only fix!!!! I am so upset!!! At least the controls and touchscreen worked, now we have nothing!!!! and my only hope is to pay $2,200. Our first Jeep, and obviously our LAST ONE! Any help????
Thank you so much for the info. My touchscreen was working and all controls on steering wheel. Only thing not working was the lower panel below the touchscreen. Dealer wanted the vehicle for 24 hrs for a diagnostic eval and charge me $100.00. We tried pulling 2 other fuses with no luck. I read this thread and then read this article. With Frank Gunter's answer and stating which fuse to pull, I went and got the needle nose plyers, pulled the fuse F49, stuck it back in, started the car up and HELLO....the lights went on and the entire panel now works. Thanks guys!!!!!
TERMINALS COLD. WHEN THEY HEAT UP ALL WORKS. DESIGN FLAW.
Hey, I have a 2014 Grand Cherokee Overland and having the same center console controls not working problem. I have pulled fuses, disconnected battery and no change, the controls south of my touch screen do not work..... Does anyone have any other ideas before I take it to the dealership? Thanks,
Responding to Chad...I have a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited and pulled the Fuse F49 (Integrated Central Stack/Climate Control). The fuse was good so I put it back in and the control panel below the touchscreen started working again. Have had no issues since. Hope this helps.
I have a 2014 Jeep GC limited. It's been great overall for me, I have owned 4+ years. Within the last 2 months I have the EXACT same thing happening to me that is happening to many of you. It is in the shop right now. They are telling me a new radio is needed. The software update to fix the phone will most likely corrupt the radio and I will need a new radio regardless of if they do the up date or not. :/ Ugh
I just got my 2015 Jeep Cherokee Latitude back from the dealer today and they are also telling me that I need a new radio. Um... nope. Chrysler better figure out how to fix this or they are going to buy me a new radio. This is beyond ridiculous.
Today, my touch screen went out on my '14 Jeep GC, but the A/C controls still light up like they have power. The problem is that I'll try to turn the A/C on, and it'll come on for a minute before changing (without me touching it) to both the front and rear defrosters BLASTING hot air. I tried the hard reset of the screen, but that didn't do anything, and I also pulled F49 out, inspected it (it was fine), and I reseated it. No joy. I've noticed other random things that seem electrical in nature as well. The cigarette lighter port isn't working for my phone charger anymore. The compass direction on the instrument panel is definitely wrong, and the clock on the instrument panel is showing --:--. Any ideas before I take it to the dealer and they try to rip me off?
Hi J.J. i changed the OEM radio Unit for another aftermarket and the control panel have the same problem, Could you fix it? i'm a little bit desperate...
I have a 2015 Limited GC. A problem developed with the center dash going out. Also the fuel door stopped working. The fuel door issue was repaired by the local dealer under warranty . When I returned with the HVAC issue the dealer told me that the multi wire connector in the right kick panel needed to be replaced at $3200. When I got home I examined the connector. Sure enough it needed replacement but only because the mechanical had broken the locking mechanism and had it held together with a wire tie. I split open the connector and sprayed the two halves with CRC 5-56 marine terminal cleaner. I put it back together using new wire ties. It's been working well.
Thanks to this forum and your folks. Dash controls on my 2017 JGC Overland went out suddenly and I had to control radio, HVAC, etc. using touch screen. After reading this I tried the F49 fuse cycling trick and everything is back. Thanks to all.

You guys rock! The F49 worked like a charm. The dealer wanted $1k to install a new unit. It acted up with I took my GC to the dealer to get the computer flashed for a diesel emissions recall. They claimed it wasn't related to their work.

Thanks for sharing this very helpful advice! We pulled F49 in our 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Then put it back in, and immediately all the buttons below the screen lit up and functioned again! We really appreciate all the support!

You guys seriously are amazing! was about to take my car to the shop, but glad my sister did some quick research for me, and we were able to fix it ourselves! Just took the fuse out and put it back in, worked like a charm!!

Hey all, I am having the same issue with buttons below the touch screen not working, I pulled fuses several times and finally got the buttons to work. The only problems I am still having that may not be related is that the whole screen for my instrument panel is flickering occasionally. Sometimes it will be flickering on and off for a while, other times it just turns off and right back on again. Additionally when playing radio or Bluetooth the music cuts out for about 10-20 seconds, and it will do that sporadically, sometimes very frequently.

2020 Grand Cherokee Limited X. Have similar problems...I took out fuse F49, disconnected the positive terminal for a few minutes...nothing works still. Anyone have any other suggestions. Its a lease so im not worried about cost just annoyed none of my buttons work. Very annoying.

I've disconnected the negative battery terminal for and hour before putting it back on........nothing. Just pulled #49 fuse, looked fine. Put it back in and still nothing! 2016 Grand Cherokee Any suggestions now?
Guru96SYVM answered 2 years ago
It happened to me today, the removal and replacement of the fuse 49 and it worked fine. Never happened before and had car for 7 years.. love it and glad it was a simple fix.
I have the same problem as previously mentioned on my 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland : the screen goes blank and not responsive. Cannot use any of the climate controls below the screen. After 3-5 minutes it will finally come back on and work fine. It often is random when it happens, but sometimes appears related to location- maybe connection to cell towers as goes out in same place at times. It resets all my climate controls (AC Temp) back to 75 and sometimes does not reset any radio stations preprogrammed. Dealer wants me to replace radio. I’m finally thinking of doing this. Has anyone replaced the radio and had the problem resolved? Reprogramming/ updating did not work. Any other suggestions? I don’t want to spend the money on a new radio system if it still won’t function properly!

Pulled F49 and reinserted, all working now. Many thanks to all for “the fix”!
GuruDTMVTF answered 5 months ago
Pulled F99 and F49 at the same time... rest itself and all is well. Battery disconnect did not work, F49 by itself did not work...
My display stopped interacting with the manual controls. I re-seated F49 fuse and realized every other fuse was not fully seated (popping out a bit) and I pushed down on all and re- seated each of them. Now my manual controls are working with the touch display again. I am wondering if this might have been causing other intermittent problem I had as well with key- fob not operating correctly.
