Check ending light

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I own a 96 BMW z3 roadster.
My check engine light is bad. In
order to pass smog I can not have
the bad light. Is this an easy fix? I've
heard it's very expensive to just
change it. Also is it considered a
sensor or just the light?

My problem is the opposit. Nothing is wrong with the car but the light won't go out. I can reset it but once I turn the car off and back on again the light pops back on.

My sons Audi 4 check engine light is always on and the dealer says there is nothing wrong - he hasn't mentioned having trouble passing smog.
