Catastrophic Transmission and Engine Damage on our 2015 BMW 328xi

Our BMW wagon suddenly and inexplicably stopped on the highway, and
the technician at our local dealership says the transmission locked up -
("reason is unknown until it's torn apart in Germany"). When the lock up
occurred, they believe the jolt from the transmission transferred to the
engine because the transmission was in Drive, causing the engine to
skip/jump timing.
Wondering if anyone has heard about this happening before, or perhaps
experienced themselves? Our Tech said it's very rare. Car only had 40k
miles on it, and 1 + month out of warranty... :(

I would definitely get a second opinion. Find an independent BMW garage near you.
