Engine sputtered oil and coolant under the hood!

Our Odyssey began to smell like oil as we were driving. We lifted the hood to
find oil and coolant splattered all over the engine on the left side.  The car
had to be towed. Honda is opening up the cylinder head to diagnose.
Any ideas on what might have caused this?
