I try to thaw out the windshield before leaving the
house so I start it to warm up. Problem is no heat
blowing out to thaw windshield until I put it in gear
and start driving. This just started happening
recently. Why?

For some reason, the defroster vent isn't opening- this is a fairly new car- isn't it under warranty?
Your coolant may be low. Check the level in the overflow tank. If it is low or empty that might indicate that the coolant in the system is low. When completely cold, like before your first start in the morning, open up the radiator cap and check that the coolant is all the way up to the opening. (DO NOT OPEN A HOT RADIATOR!!!) If not full, add coolant to both the radiator and the overflow tank too. Don't overfill the overflow tank. Fill only up to the lower "cold line". My 2015 lost enough coolant by the time I hit 50.000 miles to have the same problem. Not sure how I lost the coolant, but no more has been lost since refilling it. It took about 1/3 to 1/2 gallon to top it off.
