How can I tell if my car has suffered water damage after flood?
Asked by Ashfon09 Aug 08, 2017 at 02:17 PM about the 2015 Honda Civic Coupe EX
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
It recently flooded where I live and I had to drive through some standing water.
The carpets feel dry to the touch, its been two days but theres no smell of
wetness and the car seems to be functioning as normal but I'm still worried
water may have gotten into the car. How likely is it that my car could have
experienced some form of water damage that just hasn't become noticeable
yet?

If no water was in the cabin then your computer is fine, If car did not loose power or die while in the water then engine is fine. Once I dropped my Honda in a Hole that was in a flood and the car was pointing down so most of engine was under water but the air filter and top of motor was not but at this angle the cabin was flooded up to the bottom of dash and to the front seats it set running for three hours while I finally got it towed out as it would not back up in that position, I drove it the rest the way home dried carpets out and never had a issue with electronics, let also say this was at night and headlight were on under water and never went out, the car never lost power or shorted out. The battery was fully under water.
Well if it sounds like it's spitting up water out the muffler while driving there's a chance that your car took on some water so that means that the cars gas will stop igniting which means you should go to a high speed to cough up the water if there isn't a body shop around but if there is a body shop then go to it and if you can get it to higher ground if it already happened then body shop is your best bet I hope I helped out your problem

See if the air filter is wet, if no water is inside you are ok as you can wash the under side and engine compartment without hurting it as long as none goes threw the motor via the air intake past the air filter.
I just recently went through 3 feet of water under a bridge that flooded in Chicago. I was the only Saran that didn this because I couldn’t turn back and cars were coming up behind that were close to smashing into my Honda Civic. I had just put in some toyo tires the night before as well as 19 inch rims. I was so scared because only semi trucks were going. The car went through like a champ. I’m sure the new tires helped but I never seen anything like that. My car is fine and fortunately it only got kinda dirty under the hood. I drive home fine and the car seems perfect. Took it to a mechanic and everything is fine Thank God.
