How do I know if my 1974 Chevrolet el camino is really an SS?

You need to find the build plate (Protect-o plate). Should be riveted to the firewall at the top on the drivers side. SS cars are easy to fake. If I where you I'd pick up a Chevelle/El Camino ID book. There are several out there to choose from. It will give you a detailed description of what to look for in a true SS car.
