Strange Vibration
Asked by scott5835 Nov 10, 2008 at 06:50 PM about the 2001 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer 4WD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have the AWD 2001 Eddie Bauer. When accelerating through 55 mph the car vibrates like you are running over rumble strips. It stops immediately, but will also sometimes do it coming down in speed through the 55-60 mph range. It is less noticeable when accelerating hard. A friend said this may be the AWD system kicking the front wheels off?
Any advice such as guesses on the problem, possible solutions and most importantly the cost of the solutions would be greatly appreciated.

If not AWD, check to see if your front wheels are balanced...any tire shop can do that for you. That would be the cheapest first suggestion.
Thanks. I was told that this could also be caused by the torque converter going in and out of overdrive. I put some shudder stop in, and we will see.
Check your suspension, the Eddie versions had the air suspension, it could be as simple as the compressor filling the suspension. Whatever it is, it would be best to pass through a ford dealership, the expedition is a hard vehicle to diagnose, especially the package versions.
did u ever find out problem with expedition i have the same problem when accelerating it does the vibration but when just cruising it doesnt thanks
That is called torque converter shudder. It happens when the truck shifts into overdrive, so the timing of when this happens depends on acceleration, speed, and the incline or decline of the road. So don't expect it to happen at any given speed. My car has been doing it for about 3 years and so far it has been nothing but a little annoying. Hasn't gotten any worse or caused any damage to the car. Not saying it can't, it just hasn't done it to mine. Quite an expensive repair. Figure $2K minimum.
I have an 03 also that makes noise, jacked up all four wheels then started it and put it in drive, let idle. I found that left front tire was turning and u-joints to front axel were shot. replaced u-joints and actuator on front left, noise is gone!
Did u ever find out what the cause was?
I have the same problem with my 04 expedition
Just bought a 98 expedition 2wd with same problem. Has a new front end new tires balanced new rear u joints breaks calipers and rotors everything but motor and trans could this be the torque converter? Was told cat converter too? Because the motor will almost stall at an idle if u rev the engine up quick
Hi. We have a 1999 expedition & my hubby drives it to and from work. About 20 miles each way. Tonight has been the 2nd time the drivers side air bag came on & flickered and then stayed on. Also, the vehicle was shimming. This all happened when he hit over 40 mph. Any ideas? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!
Just bought a 1999 expedition with thst shutter issue. Thanks for the ideas on where to start looking for the proble.
99 expedition 4WD Same problem years ago (rumble strips when shifting into and out of OD) ....There is an additive used for the rear limited slip differential that my ford garage used when they changed to trans fluid. The additive is called XL3. Each time I have trans fluid changed I tell them to add... never a problem since
this is a shudder in the torque converter ,, while driving my car around 50-55 miles per hrs it feels you are going through strips in the road and the car vibrates ,, i used an additive call INSTANT SHUDDER FIXX by lube gard in my 08 mountaineer and it worked ,,I bought it at my local auto parts store ,, just add the tube to the transmission and run the car about 20 miles and it when away .. try it it might work for you also .. I suggest to read the instructions first
Shudder fixx worked for me. I used the platinum version 20 bucks 04 awd expedition with 245k miles Worth every penny!
I have a 2004 expedition Eddie Bauer Had shudder vibration shake between 40 & 50 mph.. Had a slightly bent drive shaft.. Replaced and problem stopped for me.. Hope this will help..

An obd2 code read goes along way no you also can get a shudder while driving if the engine is misfiring at times it may feel like the motor is going to fall out or front axle is about to come out. This is due from a ignition coil on one or more cylinders failing. This as well could be a dirty mass air flow sensor or an intake leak. For checking intake or vaccum leaks use wd40 spray it around the intake. Avoid the serpentine belt at all costs. This should be done while the vehicle is running. If you get the belt you need to get a new one there designed to be dry a stiff. If you have anymore questions feel free to ask away.
Sounds like 4 wheeldrive actuator gear going bad
I have 2 expedition a 97 and 2003. The 2003 when accelerating it felt like running over rumble strips. The transmission went out shortly afterward. My 97 shutters when accelerating it was misfiring due to coil.
