What could cause my abs light to appear as well as a winding noise that won't stop even when the vehicle is shut off?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I went to drive my 2001 Ford Expedition XLT today and I noticed the abs light was on. I didn't think much of it and figured it would go back off. Well needless to say it didn't. A minute or two later I noticed a winding noise on the driver side by the tire. I arrived to my destination and shut the truck off but the noise persisted. I've checked fuses and seeked help from auto part stores and I still cannot figure out what it is.

I can only stop it by disconnecting the battery terminals which tells me its electrical but I'm clueless as to what it is.

okay there are wheel sensors and an xfer/tranny sensor too~
migration_judge_roy answered 10 years ago
no blinking light? have someone pull that wheel and inspect...could be a sensor out of place there~
a worn front well bearing can cause abs light to come on and cause a howling noise but the noise stops when vehicle is not moving.you might have more than one problem.you could pull each fuse one at a time and when the noise stops u could look in your trucks manual to see what that fuse powers and find your problem that way.

Clear the codes...after reading the codes....with your fifteen dollar handheld device~ then tell us which numbers it says~

the port to do the readings is broke. Found that out when I went to get it checked out for the check engine light. The previous owner had to have messed it up

and no blinking light. the only thing that's on is the abs light now. the check engine light is off as well now. But I had the battery unhooked so now it's just the abs light that's on and its not blinking.

you might look in your owner's manual for a way of shutting this thing off with holding the tripodometer...switchin' it off and on...? ,,,,look in your book~
mine did the same thing its a hub that damaged the abs sensor... changed hub problem gone. hope this helps..... merry xmas all

What could cause my abs light to appear as well as a winding noise that won't stop even when the vehicle is shut off? will it leave me stranded?
I have a ford expedition xlt too, did you ever figure out What the problem really was?
I have a 2000 expedition xlt and mine is doing the same thing and ive been told it is my abs pump. May be a relay or the pump itself. But with it not stopping when i shut the key off leads me to think the relay may have gotten hot and possibly welded itself causing a constant current going to the pump. Will be checking this out when rain stops.
If your abs control module goes out, your abs pump will continue to run and burn up. Pull the fuse to shut it off and replace the module
After starting my 2001 Ford Expedition it won't go into gear I checked the brake lights and got them working but still you won't go into gear after starting but it will go into gear if I put it into neutral first and then started what is causing this and how do I fix it
It’s probably a wheel sensor gone bad causing the abs pump motor to continue after turning car off. This is not an uncommon problem in expedition. It will eventually burn up the pump, then gues what, no more noise! Lol
