You can buy a MAPP- Oxygen tank set up and braze things together for under $100** , I have , But professionally they use MIG or wire feed , Putty and paint makes you what you ain't
Welding sheet metal (and doing a good job) is not for beginners. Take a class and practice before working on vintage sheet metal you don't want to ruin. Check out eastwood.com for welders and other things you will need.
I bought a little hobby welder for home, mig, flux core, used a 110 outlet. OK for thin metal spot welding. I don't think it was very expensive, can't remember? On thin metal, spot welding may be the way to go, hopefully no warpage. Most of my working years, I was a welder for manufacturer. We used mig--tig--stick. Mig was the fastest. Tig looked nice on stainless and aluminum, but, slow going, for me, anyway.
