Don't know about 4 runners, but older explorers came with torsion bar front suspension which held up really well. New explorers, I believe, have front wheel drive. In my 2003, they switched away from torsion bar suspension. I also live in an area where roads are rough, my next purchase was a pickup.
The new Explorers come with 4 wheel drive as an option. Toyota is always are good choice. The Ford Edge might be something you would like.
I am getting rid of an 08 Outback which has been a nightmare for repair costs. Before that car I had an 03 Explorer and it was great.
