Doing it yourself is fairly cheap. Taking it to a shop will cost around $1000 to $2000. The high cost is because of the amount of parts that need to be taken off and replaced. Any time you remove a cylinder head you not only have to replace the head gasket, but the intake and exhaust gaskets. Coolant gaskets and head bolts. The higher end shops will usually check if the head is warped or cracked as well.
