how many miles is too many to buy, used?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Checking out some Volvo XC90s hoping to gain a better understanding of
purchasing CPO and how many miles is too many miles to be buying. I
understand the averages driven on a yearly basis and all of that, but is there
industry knowledge that says to never buy more than X number of miles? Is it a
formula? Is it just what you can stomach?

There is no formula. Some drivers don't like driving anything past warranty, some 100K, some 200K, etc. It's all in what you like to drive and your level of risk. After 120K, most vehicles need maintenance on a regular basis. So if you aren't one to DIY, you might want to stay away as costs at a volvo dealer can get pricey.

It's mostly what you feel comfortable with. Unless I'm buying a toy or a second car my rule is 4/40. That's no more than 4 years old and not more than 40,000 miles. For example when I bought my 08 Grand Marquis in 2012 it had 31,000 miles on it. Within that range a one owner vehicle is a must too! By contrast my 2000 Grand Prix which was a toy I bought in 2013 with 155,000 miles on it and I'm the 5th owner. The Grand Marquis I depend on every day, the Grand Prix I don't. Hope that helps! Jim
