2016 Ford Fusion Ecoboost coolant leak engine, needs new engine
46 Answers
Im finding "coolant leaking into cylinder" in many different forums or groups on the web. The last one I found was for a 2019 Ford. The problem I see is this: THE SAME defects keep occurring and people are not reporting it to the NHTSA for recall on all Fords with same issue. You can call Ford customer service (located in Phillipines) and be read from a script and get nowhere. However be told by Ford mechanic, go ahead and drive it (even though it is hazardous) or pay $8 grand for a new engine. https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/
I have a 2018 Fusion and they are currently replacing my engine due to coolant leaking into the cylinders/engine. I am still under warranty and there was recently a recall issued, so thankfully I am covered. I would check with your dealer to see if your car is covered under the recent recall. I just received my recall notice January 18, 2020.
2015 ford fusion just found out yesterday coolant leak, taking vehicle back to dealership Tuesday to see what they are going to do and doing pressure test
My 2017 was remote started for less than 1 minute and lost compression to every cylinder 2 weeks after the "PCM" reprogramming for the coolant pump was announced to owners as a "COURTESY". OUT of warranty, I have a $28,000 car I drove for 2 years, took immaculate care of, and now a $5500 bill for a new long block. 2nd ford in a row with issues (focus crappy CVT), and will be my last. A plan - be damned!
My 2016 Fusion with 1.5L Ecoboost had the same problem, Piston #2 codes for last 2 years randomly show, excessive coolant burn. Didn't know until 4k miles over warranty that engine needs to be replaced, told by Ford service.
My 2016 ford fusion ecoboost overheated several times and had to keep replacing coolant, I have officially filed a complaint with the National Highway safety Admin. I reached out to first customer service about the matter they said there was no recalls for the issue I had. However our 2017 Ford fusion had received a recall notice in the mail about coolant leaking into the engine cylinders due to a design flaw in the engine. I then had it diagnosed at a Ford dealer ship March. 5th and they confirmed that it was coolant leaking into the engine cylinders, $6800 for a new engine. that is half the blue book value. reaching out to Ford Customer service again now that I have had the car serviced and see what will happen next. If you have the same issue please contact the NHTSA and file a report, the more reports they have the sooner they start the investigation and put forth a recall.

Did you start the class action lawsuit? We are going through the same thing right now. 2016 Ford Fusion eco boost. Started with coil, then cracked spark plugs, then 2 more coils, then a flooding noise in my engine, then they shook a water bottle in my face from my side door, then I left it was still swooshing in my engine, and then is started to over heat. Now they want me to pay 4000$. They filed a submission for the board and got denied because I don’t have enough loyalty points... I’m a 20 year old girl, I can’t own 20 fords. They filed another one and added a family member who was a previous ford owner. Denied again. So they filed for an appeal to the regional supervisors, but I doubt they will. Looking for a class action lawsuit and cannot find anything. Just a bunch of complaints on here and the NHTSA, and nothing being done about it.
I have a 2016 Fusion with 2.0 eco boost. I was told by the dealership I have the same problem. A coolant intrusion into cylinder 4. The only way to fix is new engine. I am filing a case with Ford and calling the Ford zone manager. Anyone have update on class action lawsuit?
I am having the same issue listed here! 2015 Fusion 1.5 L Ecoboost. 74,100 miles. Been having a check engine light pop on and off for 6-7 months! Have had spark plugs replaced, ignition coil #2 replaced, a coolant overheat light, etc. Took to the ford dealership this weekend and there's coolant leaking into the 2nd cylinder and they want to replace the long block for $6400. No longer under warranty of course. Now we are trying to decide what to do. Do we fix or do we just call it a day a get a new car? I've had problems off and on since we bought the car.
My 2019 with 21000 miles is in shop now gettin new engine cause of coolant in cylinder and car was mis firing .):
Just had the same issue with a 2015 Fusion with 61k miles we took it in because check engine light came on. they kept it over night pressure test and said coolant leaking into cylinders. Recommend replacing the engine! $6287 ok sure FORD you can STICK IT!! You had a service bulletin about this issue and failed to notify us! So now you make cars that last about 5 years and need to go straight to junkyard!! RIDICULOUS!! They better cover this in or out of warranty I don't care what warranty says! A car should NOT have to have an engine replaced after 5 years!! PERIOD
Having the same issue with coolant leaking into fourth cylinder. Getting quoted $6-$8K for a 2015 Fusion with less than 55K miles. Warranty is 2 months expired. Currently have a case open with Ford for this known issue. Any information regarding class action lawsuit? Additionally, I am filing out the complaint for NHTSA, as recommended above, but unsure how this is a safety issue (I apologize for my car ignorance). What safety issues could this lead to? I want to make sure I have complete information on my complaint. Thanks!
I have 2017 with the same issues I am told it needs a small block. I am fighting ford because when I got recall notice it was smoking told service department and was told thsts why the recall was send out. So I will be getting an attorney to sue ford I shouldn't have to be out 5000 because they cant build a motor correct
I have 2017 Fusion every now and then when I change the wipers fluid I noticed i'm low on colant. It happened twice already i've changed the transmission like 2 months ago I talked to my mechanick about it, but he was not worried, now I'm reading your comments and I'm pretty convinced I have to sell asap, before I get served 5-8k bill for new engine. Ford is 94k miles, transmission started slipping at 90k miles\
I have a 2015 Ford Fusion 1.5 EcoBoost 116000 MI and now it's losing coolant about an inch in the reservoir every 20 miles or so. The dealer told me to keep driving it but I need a new engine the charge me $340 they changed my oil and filled my fluid bunch of damn Crooks. Ford can no longer be trusted I guess I'll be buying a damn Japanese car in the future.
I have a 2016 Ford Fusion and I just recently began experiencing these problems as well. I have had to have my car towed twice in two days. On one of those occasions my car literally shut off while driving it on a busy freeway. Thankfully I was able to maneuver it to the emergency lane. The shut off apparently was due to an engine coolant failure. Towed it to a local dealer where they were unable replicate the problem. After speaking with ford about it was told that coolant is more than likely leaking and I would need to replace the entire engine. I have filed a complaint to the NHTSA concerning this matter.

I have the same issue as everyone else 2015 Ford Fusion 1.5 eco boost
Just found out today that my 2015 Ford Fusion has the same leak.$4,200.00 and they will replace it. I'm way out of my warranty. Still owe on my loan. How frustrating when Ford is aware of the situation and they don't send out anything to there customers. Apparently I'm not alone.
Same here fusion 2015 1.5L fusion - coolant leaking in to Cylinder 1 from manufacturing error Car shaking violently on start up and smoking. Apparently I have to get a new engine. Ford said tough luck, and we do not care. It is outrageous. NHTSA Complaint Number: 11343242.
We need to report to NHTSA is straight forward, otherwise nothing will happen.
Hi I am having the exact same issue...need a new engine for my 2016 Ford fusion with 122k on it. This is due to coolant leaking into gasket/engine. Please reply to psdmolly@gmail.com as I do not know how to access this site. I'm by myself and 58 years old and am not great on computers. Ruth
Had a service engine soon light come on 2 weeks ago in my 2017 fusion with a 2.0 eco boost. The light went back off a few days later but I had already made a service appointment at the dealer where i had purchased it brand new. They've done all of the routine maintenace on the car BTW. They said it just need new spark plugs and injectors cleand, so they did that which was over $400. The light came back on a few days later, so I took it back. It has 77,000 miles on it which is 2000 miles over the extended warrranty. They told me now it has coolant leaking into cyclinder number 1. It will be $6,000 to fix. I went off in their dealership. Their CEO asked me to give him a few days. I hope He does the right thing. I've spent alot of money there over they years
Please report the cases to NHTSA https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/ I don't know what else to do. It is unbelievably negligent of Ford.
I just had the same issue happen on my 2017 Fusion Titanium with 70k miles on it. I bought a 7yr-100k miles bumper to bumper warranty at time of purchase and dealer is telling me they are waiting for approval to replace the engine from the warranty company and it will take a couple days to get an answer....the answer better be yes. Stay tuned
I think you will be OK. I hope you are. My 5 year warranty expired in April before the problem in my car. Planet Ford offered me $2,500 dollars on a 31,000 trade in. That's a 87% depreciation in 5 years. This is the very same place that sold me the Eco "Bust" Engine in the first place. What really smarts is that Ford knew this problem existed and didn't let people know. Hoping that the warranty periods expire before it went wrong. There is an existing Ford technical service bulletin on this 19-2139 issued in 2019 (when my warranty was still valid) . In the service bulletin they list around 80 components, including the short engine block, that have to be replaced and another 19 components that might need to be replaced, and 20 + hours labor time... This is a legacy problem from the 1.6L. I really don't know how Ford can get away with selling cars with known latent design defects. Oh yeah!!! it effects the Escape also.
Follow andik1958 good advice Fill out the complaint with NHTSA. It takes 5 minutes and is really easy to navigate. https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/
i can't believe how many people have this problem... I'm actually shocked and thought i was sold a bad car lol... so this is my story.. a few months back i had my cars pop up out of nowhere tell me it was overheating brought it to my original dealer.. they told me nothing was wrong but my coolant was an odd color so they flushed it.. and sent me on my way even WITH the check engine light on... so now here i am a few months later with a blown engine because the whole time my coolant was leaking into my cylinder 1.. i was just a few miles under warranty when i had brought my car in... now I'm a LITTLE over my miles for the warranty and my car is screwed and they want me to pay 8000 for a brand new engine..... WOW thanks to a lll of you who shared your story. i got a lawyer and I'm not giving up..im 21 years old doing this all on my own with no help and they screwed me!!!!!!!
I took my 2017 Ford Fusion with 75k miles into Kelly Ford in Beverly, ma because engine lite went on. They told me the next day that coolant had leaked into engine and engine was totaled. We had to pay $6400 for a new engine. Kelly told me we would get covered by Ford as it was due to a recall. After many calls to Ford they rejected us. Ford told us it was up to Kelly to pay and Kelly told us it was Fords responsibility to pay. This is a complete scam so I will be reporting this to the AG of Mass.
I agree I am going to do the same as this is wrong and as always the small guy gets slammed by corporate America Hideous
I have a contact in law that is dealing with this case. I will send details
I am the 2017 fusion with 77,000 miles guy from about 10 posts ago. The dealer did get the extended wararnty people to meet me half way. Im still out over $3200. They really didnt want me in or near their dealship every Saturday telling my story.
I am having the same issue. The dealership has had my car since 7/1. I am still waiting on an engine to ship they just told me it will not ship until 9/21. They also will not give me a loaner car because my car is out of warranty 2016 Fusion Titanium with the 2.0L ecoboost. Honestly i will never buy a Ford again after this. My first and my last.
Add me to the list. 2016 Fusion, 70,000 miles. Case denied by Ford for low LTV score. $4300 @GuruJKWSD, new service bulletin number is 20-2100 from April of this year.
Same coolant issue many have mentioned on my 2015 Fusion 2.0L Ecoboost . Filed a complaint with NHTSA - complaint # 11365125

Same issue!!! 2016 EcoBoost. Filing a complaint now.
Same issue but ours is a 2018 Fusion. SInce it's 7k over warranty, Ford reps have all said too bad and the $5k repair comes out of our pocket. $5k to fix a 2 year old car!! We are fighting back and have contacted a local news station as well as a lawyer. Ford released a bulletin about this issue before we even purchased our car. It's a known issue and they won't help people and stand by their product.
Yes this is terrible customer service. I am working with Krohn and Moss Ltd consumer law center. They are well aware of this case. Ford are going to be kicked where it hurts on this. The name "Eco Bust Engine" is beginning to stick. Which will not only affect their cars, but will also affect their truck sales. I have not repaired mine yet. I am buying another manufactures car instead, which i can not really afford. I will get mine repaired when Ford are forced to do a safety recall, as i can imagine it will be very difficult to get your money back if you pay them to build a new engine, Marcus
Oh yeah! To add insult to injury Planet Ford on I45 in Houston offered to buy my 2015 Fusion off me with its eco bust engine for 2,000 dollars.

Yes i have same problem at 110k km , and now i'm waiting to change motor
Having the exact same issue. 2013 Fusion 1.6L eco boost engine. Coolant is disappearing at a rapid rate, but I don’t see it anywhere outside of the engine. Long story short, I’m taking it in tomorrow (already knowing my car was recalled for this exact issue and the ‘fixed’ it by adding a sensor that’s completely useless and doesn’t prevent complete engine failure.). I’m filling out the class action suit info, in addition to the NHTSA complaint. It’s evident Ford made a terrible product and the consumer is left with the bill.

I have a 2013 Fusion with 1.6L eco boost engine that has only 130,000 miles on it. It is an exceptionally clean, garage kept and diligently maintained vehicle. The low coolant level warning light came on the first time a couple of months ago. Has since come on 3 more times. Coolant loss is slow, about 2 cups lost every 200 miles. The check engine warning has also come on twice and scans revealed trouble code P0303, a misfire in cylinder #3. Having no visible external leaks but white smoke and antifreeze odor from tail pipe on cold startups, I knew immediately that coolant was leaking into a cylinder. With the misfire in cylinder #3 it is most likely that cylinder the coolant is leaking into. Took the car to Waxahachie Ford a couple of days ago. They called me today said that the engine has and internal coolant leak. Their recommendation, a new engine at a cost of $8600 or a new short block at a cost they are still working up. I have done a lot of research into this issue and feel certain that Ford is doing its best to cover this ECO BUST issue up. I will be giving it my all to see that they do not get away with it. Will definitely be submitting my info to the class action suit and filing the NHTSA complaint.
I fully agree Ford should not get away with this. It is very dangerous and there is a risk of fire.

I just took my 2019 Ford Fusion to dealership last week due to engine light on. They checked and said coolant in cylinder one, they can take apart until end of this week and give final diagnosis Im thinking a new engine. They said no rental as I did not purchase extended warranty plan. What a joke. Im so angry and sad 12K miles on it

Same issue with my car too 2017 model ford fusion. Ford servicing is asking $8700 to replace the engine due to a coolant leak. Learned my expensive lesson. I will never buy ford in my life again.

Just bought a used 2015 fusion with 48K. Took it to my mechanic when my check engine light came on. Same problem. Antifreeze leaking into the cylinders. For Ford not to offer a recall by now tells me I'll never get a near a Ford again. What a rip-off!
