Why does the search/adv/search limit my search radius

Because there are only a few people that will travel hundreds of miles for a car or truck. Unless you are searching for a very specific car, it is not worth locating a car a 500 miles away and have to pay shipping or travel costs.

Because they are just CarGurus. not CarGenius. They don't really think things through. I mean how hard could it be to make search nationwide? Use a competent site like Cars.com or Autotrader until they figure it ouy
