2016 Hyundai Elantra overheats when driving but not when idling

Asked by Brittany Jan 12, 2024 at 04:02 PM about the 2016 Hyundai Elantra Value Edition FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car just recently started overheating on my way to
work the other morning. It will get all the way to hot but
when I slow down the temperature will go back down. I did
need some coolant so that was added but still is
happening. I let it sit and idle today for at least 10 mins
while we were checking the thermostat, never even got up
fully to the halfway mark while idling. Rode 2 minutes
down the road and it immediately overheat. Open to any
suggestions! No leaking from what we can tell

Air pocket in the cooling system is very common, restricted radiator, water pump vanes damaged, but I’m afraid that this actually sounds like a blown head gasket, that is the first thing to test for.

Check the temperature of you radiator when the engine is hot. Look for cold spots and temp. drop across the radiator. Does your cooling fan come on when it is hot?
