Subaru Legacy Burning Oil

Asked by Srtayl2 Jan 15, 2020 at 03:15 PM about the 2016 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Premium AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2016 Subaru Legacy Prem. with 154k miles. Out of the last 5 or so oil
changes, Ive run out of oil two times. I believe its burning oil and the engine
will need to be replaced soon. The tail pipe is filthy. Should I get a replacement
engine? Just get a new car?

First you should learn to check the oil level and top it off when needed. Your oil consumption is typical for a Subaru. If you had notified Subaru earlier you might have gotten a new short block out of the deal but probably not with that many miles on it. I would switch to 5W20 or 5W30 oil and check the level more often.

Ok thanks, I’m using 5W20 now. I didn’t know I needed to check oil as long as I’m getting the recommended service done ( oil changes, inspections, tire rotation, etc.). Good to know though so thanks for that. I actually did notify the dealer the first time it happened, and they told me it might be the amount of driving since I commute to work. I thought they didn’t put enough oil in it. When it happened this last time they were unable to check since I spilled a little oil trying to fill it up. I’ll ask about the short block since I brought it up to them before...

Good luck. My 2013 Legacy was burning oil and we ended up doing the oil consumption test which actually put it over the 100k miles so it was like jumping through hoops to get them to cover but we did end up getting a new short block put in it.

I’ve never heard of the oil consumption test! Thanks for that! How long did it last after you got the new short block installed?
