2016 Subaru Forester - UNKNOWN rattle noise from muffler/exhaust

Asked by Arizona Aug 21, 2019 at 09:04 PM about the 2016 Subaru Forester 2.5i Premium

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Seems to be an odd noise emitting from the
muffler/exhaust upon acceleration ONLY. Sounds
like a gritty/rattle that is not loud but loud enough
for me to suspect something is not normal. No
engine lights or warnings are on. The sound is hard
to detect/hear when driving but only when
windows are down and radio is off. The noise can
especially be heard in areas such as driving near
or in front of a store or other cars, things that can
relay the echo to me of what I’m hearing.

May be pebbles between heat shield and exhaust pipe somewhere, or a loose heat shield. Get it on a lift and walk around with a rubber hammer until you can find it. Push on heat shields to find a loose end, and inspect for any very small gap that would rattle under acceleration excitation; bend or bang in screw-wedges to limit movement. Same old same old. Have fun. Ern TSG/B

I have the same exact thing going on but I don’t think it’s a heat shield only when I accelerate it makes the noise and in low gears
