Not really sure what to tell you. The Rangers in general are a fairly strong and reliable truck that holds its own in the truck market (just needs to be redesigned.) Here are a few of the engine specs for that engine. 1. Horsepower is 205 2. Torque is 240 @ 3000 rpms 3. Mileage is 15city/19hwy

That is for the 2001-present Single Over Head Cam engines. The older Over Head Valve engines get 225 tq @ 2,400 rpm. The 2000 and older get between 17 city & 22 highway.
The 4.0 V6 is a powerful truck and a 2001 compared to a brand new F-150 probably has more torque because in about 2004 Ford started making low end torque F-150s and I dont know why.
they are very good engines, only one problem i have found with this engine,is the spark plugs are a job to replace.
Talking to different mechanics the new 4.o's are quite hard on fuel but they have a lot of torque for a 6
overall a good and strong motor will put up with some shit only thing i dont like, is there tendencies to eat the #1 and 3 spark plugs
It's part of the Vulcan family of motors made by ford from the early eighties onward. All are 60 degree V-6s and range from 2.6 Liters to 4.0
had one in my 95 ranger single cab short box...that truck flew...does a great brake stand and has almost too much torque for a small truck. spark plugs are tough to change...valve cover gaskets aren't easy either (if you drive it hard you'll have to replace them)
Actualy it is part of the cologne engine family. The Vulcan was the 3.0 v6 made to replace the 2.9 cologne and the 3.8 essex in midsize cars and the ranger. There is just the 3.0 in the Vulcan family, and it has nothing in common with the cologne engine family.
Would like to know if there are any 4.0 electronic fuel injected engines out there for sale for a 1998 Ford Ranger XLT, If so please respond to dthskp@hotmail.com, or call 40-399-5340 or leave a message at 406-357-2521, I am located in Montana and my name is Dean. Thanks
My truck is tough and they say cylinder 1 valve and it ran fine
I just supperchiped mine and O-boy does it have more power now. I also make sure my peddle wasn't loose like some get. This makes them suck more gas cause it can't open up the throttle all the way. After installing cold air intake and a Flowmaster I say a big gain. Not as much when I used supperchip flashpaq and now it want's to jump out of the hole. I love my 4x4. I have had both the 3L and 4L rangers. Both good trucks but the 4L is the best if you plan to haul a load of rock or something. I found the 3L lacking. As for tuff I rapped the 3L around a telephone pole sideways due to road conditions walked away without a scratch. My son parked the $l upside down in a creek after bad road conditions set him off the road and we both walked away without a scratch both were totaled of course. As for the 4L I had one in my stretch Aerostar and had 375,000 miles when I sold it and the people who bought it drove it for five years after that.
The OHC 4 liter Ford engine is also known as the Exploder because of the bad cam chain design. The pushrod 4.0 is pretty much bullet proof.
