2016 Grand Caravan RT going to 3/4 hot then back to half

Asked by REI Jun 23, 2024 at 01:43 AM about the 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan R/T FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So last Monday my van over heated, it was in the red for less than 15
seconds before i was able to pull over and park it.
turned out the Fan that i had replaced 9 months ago stopped working and
there was also a small crack in the radiator.
my mechanic installed new parts and after i left in the evening everything
was fine. the next day i took it to them again because the temperature gage
was going up to 3/4 staying there for a bit then going back down. w

We're also in a heat wave right now so i don't know if that has anything to do
with it. but in the last week I've also replaced the thermostat, water pump
and coolant temp sensors, its still doing it and we cant figure out why. the
max temp I've seen it get to before it goes back to half is 137. any ideas on
what else it could be. I've pretty much had the entire cooling system replaced
at this point.

If it only does it once after the initial start up it’s the new thermostat slightly sticking. if it does it continuously then you could have an air pocket in the cooling system.

Maybe it's the $12** piece of crap thermostat from auto zoo ? Or an air pocket Because that's what it sounds like , your " mechanic " should know this , and they should have done some testing before replacing parts you didn't need ie. compression test , bleed the system . That thing is a money pit

If it's overheating at slow speeds or while idling, like waiting in the bank drive through, it's an airflow problem. Such as the radiator cooling fans not working properly, a dirty air conditioning condenser, or a missing fan shroud. If it's overheating at higher speeds it's a coolant circulation problem. Water pump, thermostat, cooling system clogged with rust and junk, air trapped in the cooling system, or the lowerradiatorhosecollapsing. Since the mechanic just replaced the radiator I'd suspect air trapped in the cooling system. Does the heater blow hot air? If not, that's a good sign of poor coolant circulation. Jim
