Depends on where you're living... If you're in Canada, taking the cats off... Very bad idea... You'll never pass an Emissions test, and if the MTO nabs you... just not worth it. I don't know much about newer rangers either, but it's possible you'll lose performance removing them as well... the only real way you're going to get better sound is to put some headers on and look into different mufflers. there are some out there that will give a deeper sound. But they will cost. If you put Glasspacks on, you'll probably get the ricer sound. You'll have to look into a more expensive route. You could always do sidepipes too, cut the pipes off just behind the rear doors. (If that can be done on a ranger...)

hey man, i would suggest something like a cherry bomb vortex muffler in place of yours right now (if its a six cylinder truck) if its a 4 it'll sound real ricer-ish, but with the six and the cherry bomb vortex it would sound pretty good, luder and deeper, my brother has a 6 cylinder dakota with that same setup and it sounds good

I have a 2001 ford ranger edge with a 3.0L V6. I put a 40 series flowmaster on mine and dumped it in front of the axle and it sounds great! It does not sound like a ricer at all! sounds as good as some f150. A cold air kit made mine louder too. Its fairly loud but not obnoxious. Only cost me 120$ for exhaust. Most exhaust shops will do it.
