Towing Capacity - 2016 Silverado 2500HD 6.6 Duramax Turbo Diesel, Crew Cab SB 4WDrd Bed
Asked by Ken Feb 21, 2017 at 02:36 PM about the 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LTZ Crew Cab 4WD
Question type: General
I am totally confused when doing research on what I can tow with my truck. What is the max king pin weight? I am told 18,000 total weight but when you look at calculators and subtract the weight in the truck and passengers (4), it calculates only a 9K - 12K 5th wheel max weight and our 5th wheel we bought is 13,400 dry.
How do these trucks have the ability to pull 18K? Again, I don't think I'm an idiot but I just cant figure this out! What am I missing? HELP!

Hi Ken, I appreciate your question as my husband and I are having the same problem. We have the same truck as you except we have the 8' bed rather than the 6.5', and we are having a hard time determining what size 5th wheel toy hauler we can get. The 2016 Chevy towing guide says 12,900 but the 2015 trailering guide for our truck is 16,500. Seems strange that it would drop so much. 2016 Trailering Guide https://www.chevrolet.com/content/dam/Chevrolet/northamerica/usa/ nscwebsite/en/Home/Vehicles/Commercial/02_PDFs/MY15- Trailering-Guide.pdf 2015 Trailering Guide http://www.chevrolet.com/content/dam/Chevrolet/northamerica/usa/n scwebsite/en/Home/Vehicles/Trucks%20and%20Vans/2016_Silvera do_1500/Overview/02_pdf/MY16%20US%20Trailering%20Guide_0 60816.pdf
Our guide says 17,700 lbs max towing capacity. I'm assuming that is total weight the truck can pull but is that all weight for the 5th wheel or 5th wheel and truck? I just don't know. And is it recommended or maximum? Sometimes, things are rated but can actually pull 25% or more than the rating with no problem.
I am really stumped because I thought this would be the place that could answer my questions but I guess not. :( Therefore, I have done my research and here is what I found out and please chime in if I am wrong! In my Chevrolet 2016 Duramax Diesel owners manual Supplement, page 65, "Driving and Operating" section there is a table that gives you max trailer weight, max tongue weight and Gross Combination Weight Rating or GCWR. For this truck, the GCVR is 25,100 lbs. What that means is the total weight of the truck (including occupants), trailer (in this case 5th wheel) and all cargo in both the truck and the 5th wheel. My 5th wheel is 13,425 lb and my truck is about 7,300 lbs so that leaves me with about 4000 lbs give or take of cargo and people in the truck and the 5th Wheel. I know the 5th wheel is going to be a little hard on the suspension so I am going to install airlifts to help with towing. Tell me if I am wrong...
I would run your VIN and see exactly what is specified for your truck. Towing capacity is the trailer weight plus cargo and passengers, Not the truck weight.
I think you are right Ken. It is a good idea to weigh the trailer and truck to see the total weight. Keep in mind that the trailer may end up a lot heavier with cargo and the tanks full.
How do I run a VIN to see towing capacity? The truck has 410 gears and I believe that makes a difference.
This is one VIN checker but there are others online ----- http://chevroletforum.com/forum/vindecoder.php
The VIN checker still only provides general information. Where else can a person get the facts on their particular vehicle.
No answer here same problem though My 2016 Chevy manual only has specs for the gas V8, and is confusing. I never received a supplement for duramax? Am looking for 5th wheel, so I plan on keeping it under 14000 pounds and 2600 pin weight. Nice to know I am not alone in the confusion.
Call the dot they will tell you or just stop at a truck weight station.
Look at total gvwr (gross vehical weight rating) in your owners manual or on your drivers door! Your truck with a diesel is like 23,500 gvwr so weigh your truck on a truck stop cat scale and have it loaded full with fuel and people you take on the trip! Add 1,000 pounds for food and gear then subtract your trucks total loaded weight from the manuals gvwr! This number will have to be near your manuals tow capacity to be manufactures limit! Hope this helps.
We tow a 43' fifth wheel plus toys. About 22k lbs with no issues. Tows like a champ even up hill.
Well I have been towing 35 foot Bighorn with no problems, but empty tanks except part fresh, no gen, or wash and dryer. About 12 K max with no problems, I keep the speed y 60 and under for better millage. love the setup tows great.
Had issues finding the correct GVW of my 2015 2500HD 4X Diesel crew cab short bed, so I had it weighed with tank full and a 135# 5th wheel hitch in. It is 7890 lbs.
Your total towing is on the bumber hitch. A 5thwheel weight will be different. Your your pin weight is important because you can't have more on weight than your max cargo is. Do if you have a truck that weight 6400 lbs and your gvwr is 9900lbs you have 3500 lbs to play with. All cargo in truck people, pets ect. And you pin weight. You can find that in your camper info.
Look up the online Chevy towing guide for your year truck!
42' Montana that is just shy of 17,000lbs. I have the 2015.5 2500. I don't really even feel the fifth wheel.
Thanks for all the helpful info. I bought the camper, now looking for the right truck. Mine is a43’ 2020 Montana. Dry wt 12800,16000 loaded. Glad to see I can pull with 2500hd. Thanks again
I don't think a 3/4 ton will do it. Let me rephrase that...it will tow but, that doesn't mean you should. I have a 2013 F350 4x4 LB Crew with a 6.7 diesel. My payload cap is 3074lbs. This truck has a GVWR of 11,500lbs. Truck weighs 8334lbs. A GAWR's are Frt: 6000lb Rr: 7000lb.Tow capacity is 15,900lbs. per Ford. Running load E Michelins (tires mean more than you could imagine when you're talking towing weights). I tow a 2021 Montana 5'er that weighs 12,300lbs. with a pin weight of 2350lbs. Theoretically, I'm pushing my limits. PIN WEIGHT MEANS EVERYTHING.
