I had the same problem with my 2000 Tuarus and it turned ou tto be a broken wire under the dash. Its part of the safety system that will not allow you to drive the car without brake lights. It can be defeated by getting the car in neautral before starting it. Hope this helps
for some odd reason that never came to mind. i surely do appreciate your input. driving me nuts. will let you know how it turns out. THANKS

Hey everyone. I had the same issue and I noticed the brake does have some sensor or wires attached to it. I was desperate so all I did was move the wires and make sure the sensor plug apparatus was connected well and I must have done something right bc it shifted easily out of park after that. I was alone so I don't know if the brake lights were out but I'm having a friend come over so I can test it and see if all is working now. At least now I know what to look for. Thanks for your posts as it helped me to know where to look.
I have a 99 Taurus that will only start in neutral. I was told it was an inexpensive fix. Anybody know if this is a difficult job??
