Why is my engine light staying on?

It is letting you know there is a problem going on that needs attention. You take it somewhere to have the code, codes read by a scanner that points you to a direction of a fix. Once the problem is fixed, the mechanic with the scanner will reset the light. If you just have the light reset with no fix, the light will just come back on.
