why won't my 2003 Ford Thunderbird won't shif into D4

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2003 Ford Thunderbird shifts and runs perfectly. The only thing I can't find an answer to is that when the car show D5, which is the full amount of gears the transmission will utilize and it works perfectly. When I put if in D4, it is supposed to not allow it to use the 5th gear, but still allow it to shift through the 4 gears. When I select D4, the indicator says 3 and keeps the car in 3rd gear only. The indicator does no show and E, which means transmission error. I says 3 and will only use the one gear. Like I said before, the transmission works perfectly in D5. I think there is a electrical switch issue in the gear shifter, or a programming error and need the system re-flashed. Please help. I cannot find this problem in any chat room

Scan the vehicle for transmission DTC codes, the Ford IDS VCM scanner is the best. There is a TSB for 2003 Thunderbirds, LS, Transmission 5R55S
