2002 Ford Ranger Edge V6 3.0 NO CRANK NO START

Asked by Whit1958 Jan 04, 2020 at 12:55 PM about the 2002 Ford Ranger Edge SuperCab

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

A couple of days ago, attempted to start and got only a loud thunk from the
starter.  New battery.  Today, before trying to start, THEFT light was normal.
Attempted to start, no dash lights but clicking relay sound under dash, then
THEFT light flickered.  Continued fast flash after key was turned off and
clicking relay sound under dash.  Turned key to on (not start), clicking stops
and THEFT light is off.  Turned key back off and fast THEFT light flash and
clicking relay sound.  I am not very mechanically inclined, please help.

I can help you do some testing, but, if security issue, I can't help you. the theft lamp flashes every 2 seconds with key off or acc position. It's a visual theft deterrent, nothing wrong. As a fault indicator, on and then flashing or on solid for 60 seconds. Make sure battery has a full charge and all connections clean and good, not just at the battery, all ends. See the starter relay in diagram? The relay has two sides, the load side, left side in diagram and the control side, right side in diagram. If you pull the relay and use jumper wire between terminals 30 and 87, the starter motor should crank the engine. If you try that, make sure transmission is in park or neutral and parking brake is set. Make sure vehicle can't move. As you can see terminal 30 is hot all the time and fuse protected. If it cranks with the jumper, problem should be on control side of relay. That side needs voltage and ground.
