1999 honda civic ex got hot one day next day had miss

It got hot one day the next day had slight miss in morn by end of day would
hardly run no power at all. Someone told me they saw sparks coming out the
tail pipe. Could it be converter. Is it a lost cause.

Thanks for your help. Seemed like it h appened awefully fast was running like a top and next day wouldnt pull out of ifs own tracks but thanks for reply ill check out ,,,ttiming.
Dont know if this makes sense but it was progressively sudden. It ran fine got hot sat alnight i made sure it wasv full of coolent next morning and when i drove it had slight miss necer got hot again but as i drove it more miss got worse by the end of the day it would start but wouldnt even pull out. D ur ing the day someone passed me and said sparks were comimg out tailpipe. If i let it sit for awhile it woukd run enough to go a couple miles still missing ( of course) but would keep getting worse (no power) till it wouldnt go any more. It would always start up sputter, sputter but wouldnt go. Like two sats before running like a top.
