Key won't turn

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

About a week ago I had to go to the
dealership to get a new key because it
required a chip so after doing that the new
key has been a problem every time I put it
in it won't turn I'm having lotta difficulties
with it also its been hard to pull out hard to
turn it while putting it in then this morning
when I went to put the key in it wouldn't
turn it all so my boyfriend sprayed some
WD-40 inside of the keyhole which I think
was not a good idea because now none of
the dash lights turn on . The picture shows
how far the key turns then it just stops.
what do I do please help.

the new lock set should have come lubricated with this million dollar grease they use so spraying the wd in there was a bad idea , if you had trouble you should have taken it right back to the ones that installed it and for the chip to be programmed the dealer is probably the only game in town unless you va find a lock smith to do it , , I'm thinking they cut the key from the vin # and the key that has been used for many years is worn down along with the pins in the lock set , if you have the old key compare it to the new one closely and you may see the difference , I have the same problem with the new keys I got that way and what I did was CAREFULLY file down the new one to match the old tying it out each time , Don't force it in and out of the lock , filing down the key is not something the dealer would do , keep your boy friends archaic ideas away from the vehicle , you should reconsider putting a bunch of $$ into a 20 year old car

Thank you for your insight. I actually took some sandpaper and smoothed all the sharp edges on the new key yesterday morning before he sprayed the what I thought was wd-40 come to find out it was some corrosion spray that smelled and looked to me like wd-40 anyways the key still will not turn beyond 1/4 of the way & what has me really stumped is that all the bells & dash lights aren't coming on at all it use to when I would barely put the key in? It's like there is something jammed inside preventing the key from turning all the way I even have a blister from trying to turn it. Any new ideas? Pleeeease

at this point the old lock cylinder could be destroyed , if you can find a locksmith to replace the lock and program the key it would be a bit cheaper than the dealer , but like I said the car is 20 years old , what kind of condition is it in ? are you going to spend hundreds of $$ just to have a head gasket or timing chain quit on you in 2 weeks ?
