my 97 honda accord lx will turn over but will only start if I hold the key forward and shuts right off when I let go of the key

Starts beautifully and runs great as long as I don't let the key go after starting it

There was a recall on these cars for defective ignition switches, and you need to replace the switch because when you let go of the key and the spring forces the switch back to the run position like it should, the contacts are not making a complete circuit so the car dies.
