96 Accord stops accelerating while driving,

Asked by Jeannie Mar 17, 2015 at 08:54 AM about the 1996 Honda Accord DX

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Son has a 96 Accord Value model, 160k miles.  Yesterday the check engine light came on, the speedometer stopped working and then the car stopped accelerating while driving.  All power stays on.  If you stop the car and restart it, it will start driving as normal and then does the same thing.  Almost as if the car goes into Neutral in the middle of driving, the engine will rev but wont move, until it is shut off and start it again.  Please help, this is my sons car and I am at a loss and have had horrible experience with mechanics.

The first thing you must do is take the car to an autoparts store like autozone or advance autoparts or similar and ask them to check your cars for stored code. You need to write down the trouble code numbers in the exact order that they show on the code reader, then get back to us.

So, first thing to do is have the Fuel Injectors checked out and repaired or replaced, if not just an electrical connector disconnected at one of the injectors, or a bad fuse or fuel pump or relay. Then the codes need to be cleared and the car re-driven to see if any codes come back. If the injector problem has been fixed, that may have been the cause of the second code, and if the second code comes back the solenoid valve will need to be repaired or replaced. It is quite possible that one or more electrical connectors have been disturbed or unplugged or knocked loose by someone while doing something else on or to the engine.
