P0420 is the catalytic converter. It's not working properly. When buying a new one be sure to check the emission control sticker under the hood so you get the correct catalytic converter. Vehicles delivered to different parts of the country may have different emission control systems. For example my 2003 S10 Pick Up was originally delivered to Delaware but it has California Emissions. Hope that helps! Jim

PO420 codes are endemic with noughts production Subies. Problem is that PZEV US states use richer fuels in colder climates than programming allows, so front cats wear out. Aftermarket replacements rarely work, forcing replacement with pricey OEM front Y pipes w/ cat. Most folks learn to ignore 420s and erase them just prior to emissions tests for inspections. But eventually the 420 reflags too quickly to play cat 'n mouse. $1200 solves the problem.
