Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2004 Legacy Outback. HAving a hard time finding a 2.5 manual
transmission engine. Lots of automatic trans engines and cars. Besides
switching out flywheel and clutch, what else might I have to do to put and
automatic trans engine in my manual car?

I want to keep car manual, just wondering if I can use a automatic transmission engine with my manual car, after changing flywheel?

Okay, thanks. Subaru's used to be so easy, engines were simple and interchangable, now such a mess!

I have same question... Car-part.com is my source for interchange qu's.... They list engines for manaul trans 2005 Subaru outback legacy 2.5 separate from engines for automatic cars.. why? I would assume that I can just change flywheel to accept pilot bearing and install... Is flywheel balanced to crank? Crank to flywheel bolt pattern different?? Thrust bearing different??? No way... I'm going to try it..any experience out there? And why 2005 only?
