You can but you might have issues with sensors, wiring and possible issues with the ECM...
Indeed. Just about what I was going to post but you beat me joemom. Possible, yes, but the '97 probably has a 5.7L and the '89 has way different electronics. If you do, get everything, and I mean everything from donor truck including wiring harnesses. Get the entire donor truck if possible

lol sorry was still under the truck. yes was only swapping the transmission I do own both trucks tho
and i have found alot of differences. the chevy trany was the first one ive done alone. the gmc tranny wont go in reverse and only 1 & 3 (i think) foward
