Audi A4 2008 starts then shuts off. RPMs drop to 0. Please help!

Asked by Fvjohs Apr 12, 2018 at 07:13 PM about the 2008 Audi A4 2.0T quattro S-Line Sedan AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just bought a 2008 A4 2.0t Quattro s-line trim B7
model. It works most of the time, but sometimes,
especially when it’s raining or snowing, the car turns
on, the rpms go up normally, then they drop to 0
before I can give it any gas and the car turns off. I
brought it to my local Audi dealership and they
charged me $120 to check everything and then told
me it was fine and there were no problems. It did
work for the next few months. But it is happening
again. Does anyone know any potential problems
this could be? I saw the exact same post posted 4
years ago. Pretty much, no one knew what the
problem could be. Any luck since then? Any input is
greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Yes, if the condition appears only when there is water or humidity, the problem is in the electrical system.

I’m not sure of that. I’ve just noticed that the two times it happened, there also happened to be precipitation. I picked it up from Audi after the first time during a blizzard and it drove fine. And it has rained many times since. I will still look into it being an electrical issue, but is there any other thought on a possible cause? Thank you for your help by the way

Check the high pressure fuel pump. They develop hairline cracks on the top, very hard to see. Car struggles to start when it is damp out. Take a picture of the top with your phone and then enlarge it to see if it is cracked.
