Audi A4 Shuts off while driving

Asked by Jonah_Warner26 Mar 09, 2017 at 10:34 AM about the 2003 Audi A4 1.8T Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So I was driving the other day and my car lost
complete power. Power steering went out dash light
don't work and can't lock doors. Also the speed
Gage will get stuck at the speed that the car shut
down at. We pushed it to a safe location and after
about an hour it turned on again drove it to my
friends house and after about 2 hours thought it
would be fine to drive home. Drove about a quarter
mile and had a complete shutdown again. I had it
checked at autozone the day before and they said I
need to replace the crankshaft positioning sensor.
But does that explain all the dashlights turning off
and the gadgets stuck at 20mph.

Try replacing the engine speed sensor its relativly inexpensive and has been one of the main issues for this in the older modals. ALso does this car have a regular key ignition or the slot your whole keyfob in ignition? I am thinking that some people have had issues with the keyfob starts so its possible the switch may be an issue if nothing else. this is defiantly sounding to be a sensor or key issue. also keep in mind a new battery can also die if there is a parasitic drain in the car. so have that battery tested cause if the battery doesnt have the power it can force the car to shut down on its own.

Hi Deathjam4, I have my Audi A3 1.8 1999 model, I have been driving it from work to my place and the surrounding areas until i decided to use it for a long distance and while i was i was driving i just heard the engine dies, i had to stop and i wait for like 30mins or 45mins for it to cool down and it will start again and i can drive like other 15 to 30 mins it will go off again. When i am driving i dont have to change a gear or reduce the speed that i am driving in or else it will just go off. I was told to change the fuel pump and fuel filter which i did change all that but still i have the same problem and i did change a new coil pack and new plugs but i am still having the same problem. Can you kindly please help me what could be the problem?
