Is it my fuel pump?

Asked by Megan Dec 13, 2015 at 04:35 PM about the 1990 Honda Civic DX

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car is a 1990 honda civic dx and recently my
car started jerking while I'm on the interstate. I
lose complete acceleration but when I pull over
my car is still running. The first time this
happened my idle was fine and when I touched
the gas pedal my car drive fine. The second time
my idle was jumpy. I don't know any other way to
explain it other than loss of acceleration but not
power. I have changed the fuel filter 2 months
ago, no exhaust smoke, spark plugs changed a
month ago, and used sea foam fuel injector
cleaner and I'm still having problems. I'm at a
loss. I keep reading and seeing that my catalytic
converter may be clogged but again I have no
exhaust smoke. My check engine light did come
on when my car lost acceleration the second
time. My car is older so I can't just take it to
AutoZone or oreilly and have them check my
light. Can somebody help me please?

I'm no car expert, but I do have some basic knowledge. it could be your transmission if you can't accelerate. Or the fly wheel. If the power can't get through the flywheel then it can't get through the transmission to put the power to the ground. Hence no acceleration.

It could be your catalytic converter, causing this, plus on some cars there is a mass air flow valve that can get plugged up also, so it would be a good idea to have an exhaust shop check it out for you. If it were in the trany and it is a standard, (manual shift) the clutch would be slipping and you would hear the engine revving up without the car moving.

It's an automatic. It's only lost complete acceleration Twice. It's been doing the jerking for about 2 months now. I just don't drive too often.

Ok then, I would just put some gas additive in with the gas, something like the Red Bottle of Heat, NOT the yellow one. This will brake down any water in the gas. This could cause the check engine light to come on also, may just take care of that also.
