Gear shift makes clicking noise when I brake while car is in DRIVE.

Asked by Jenna Feb 25, 2017 at 11:47 PM about the 2005 Pontiac Pursuit Base Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car is an automatic, 12 years old, 150000 kms.

My gear shift has always made the click noise when I brake while in Park -
like when I am moving from Park to Drive/Reverse. Recently, my car has
started making that same noise every time I brake while I am driving. It
clicks if I am stopping abruptly at a light and if I brake just to slow down a
few kms, etc.

I have read other forums and they seem to say it is fine - but I think other
people are complaining that it clicks when it is in Park. Mine does it while
driving.

Is this a sign that it is about to fail?

I think your are talking about the Shift Interlock Solenoid that would be by the shifter. This locks the shifter into park until you step on the brakes. Most of the time a wire will break off, then your screwed, can't shift. So I would have this looked at, wires checked.
