What can be causing the vehicle to not start?

I have a Ford Explore 2000 6 Cylinder 4.0L. It overheated and engine shut off before I could get it safely off the highway. The Heater Control valve cracked. I replaced it. The engine will turn over but will not start. I replaced the fluid lost from the broken Heater Control valve. I don't see any signs of water in my coolant or oil. What could be causing the engine to not start?

be very carefull the 4.0 does not like heat, check the oil for antifreeze , you may need to pull the drain plug to see what comes out. if you find anti. you need a motor. about the no start we need to find out if you have spark and injector pulse. a serious over heat can cause lots of different problems.i need lots more info. ive got over 35 year working on cars and would be glad to help

I was told there seems to be a loss of compression. Not sure what that means. Or what would cause that.

In order for the car to start you need spark, fuel and compression. if the motor severly over heated it will warp the heads and will give you a low or no compression. many times it will not affect all cylinders but if compression is down in several it may seem to try to start but will not. it can be rebuilt -- a machine shop can pressure test VERY IMPORTANT and plain the heads . very big job
