Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2004 Hyundai Tiburon. 5 Speed. 100k
miles(second motor) the first one ended up
throwing a rod bearing. The cause I feel is
something to do with the ticking noise.

To eliminate reasonable suspicion..
Oil is at the proper level.
Coolant and fluids full.
And not due for an oil change for another 2500
miles.

The car when started from cold start, has an
intense rattling sound in the motor but when the
idle drops the sound partially diminishes but is still
distinguishable, especially to a mechanic. When I
put it into gear and drive beyond 2500 RPM the
engine rattle intensifies. (THAT IS 3500 RPM
BEFORE A RED LINE BTW) Now when cruising,
constant pressure to the pedal the sound gets
lighter, but under a load like a hill or starting from
stop whereas you need to accelerate the engine
rattles even more. It sounds pretty sketchy,
especially when I drive and decide I need to pass
someone and shift at higher RPM to accelerate
quicker. Its insane and I just can't grasp that this is
my second motor in this car with in the first four
days of purchasing this AS IS vehicle. Can
someone help??????????? Thank you!

Some ticks/knocks are harsher under acceleration because the parts making the noise (piston wrist pin, rod bearing) are under greater pressure then. First, try and determine whether the tick/knock is equal to or one-half engine RPM, that will help you isolate the tick to the valve train/cam or the lower block (everything connected to the cam is 1/2 engine RPM). You say "intense rattling sound" at startup, usually that would point to the valve train. I don't want to just throw guesses at you, you and your mechanic will have to go over the engine to find the source of the noise, it'll either be a fairly easy fix (like lifters, rockers) or an engine rebuild (main, rod, wrist pins, cam bearings). Sucks but what can you do.

Thanks for the reply KenF. And, unfortunately the last engine had the same sounds and ended up over heating and throwing a bearing. I have just never seen a vehicle run like its supposed to perfectly when in it has a rattling coming from the bay. 1/2 the RPM the rattling goes away...It gets quiet, but as soon as you drive off and go into 3k RPM the rattling intensifies as the RPM increases. I've worked on cars for a while and this just stumps me, it makes me think that HYUNDAI has not a quality 2.0l motor... From my knowledge it sounds like either a cam tick, or lifters are getting stuck. Should I run full synthetic in the car??

My 2003 53000 mile Tiburon GT6 has a rod knocking. Will have pan dropped ($450)and hope for the best on bearings and crank.. Sheesh, Hyundai tiburons.........Man.........but they are fun to drive! This repair if engine needed($3000+ ) gonna be more than car is worth. Mechanic was surprised with an engine doing that with so little mileage.

Actually I was going to trade my tibby in yesterday it's a 2004 gt and I found out that tibby r very rare cars now so do what u can to get them fixed and fixed right

I have a Hyundai tiburon v6 2006 manual and when I accelerate it makes a ticking sound but only when in gear what could it be
