gas filling

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
We just purchased a 2003 elantra, and seem to have trouble filling it up with gas....filler neck seems to not be able to take the gas fast enough and shuts the nozzle off, even at slow discharge rates, and backing out the nozzle a bit. Any help would be great!!

I would start by having your shop check you filler neck if rubber could bent or blocked , also could be the float in you fuel pump may not be acting up . I would start by checking these things first .
Mine is a 2004, and there was some electrical problem (caused the same thing). Except the first time it happened we were stranded on vacation!!! (The car wasn't taking any gas at all) then we tried putting it in upside down. Worked like a charm. Consider getting your electrical looked at but in the mean time put the gas in upside down.

did you by any chance live in california and bought the car outside of california?

california has different nozzles on their pumps from the rest of the states.
I had this problem in Yuma, AZ as well as Phoenix, AZ.

try a place with brand new pumps. sometimes the valve in the nozzle goes bad. i had the same thing happen in illinios (where i live).
I know this thread is old but it can be that the carbon pellets from charcoal canister has been sucked up into the Vent line that goes from the vent solenoid under the car to the gas tank. When it’s blocked the fumes from the tank cannot escape and will cause gas pump to click off. You will need to drop the gas tank to access that end of the hose.
Airless, any chance you know of a video that can show me how to do that?
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nMro-RVe9b4 This ones pretty decent. He replaces his charcoal canister 1st and finds pellets in a hose. But still has problems filling with gas. It wasn’t till they drop the gas tank and find the end of the hose going into the tank which was filled with pellets that he was able to fill up normally. If pellets are able to escape the canister still it will probably happen again. I actually just rebuilt mine as a new one is over $200! If interested I can share how I did that for $25 in a couple hrs.
