2000 Ford Explorer xlt while driving on freeway with Cruz control on it started losing power and sounded like a metal chain was hitting stuff and it finally died and now won't start. Why

I've checked and it's not the alternator
It had plenty of oil and water . if it
seized up how could they be with oil
and water lelvels were there full ? Any
ideas

Five will get you ten it is one of the cam chains, tensioner, or chain guide. Front can be rebuilt with engine in the vehicle. If it is the rear chain on the back of the engine, or an associated part, the engine has to come out of the vehicle. I've been through this once. If it is the rear chain or associated part where the engine has to come out, I'd replace it with a re- manufactured engine, as the front will be going next. Also consider replacing the engine with the 4.0 OHV engine, used up to 1999. Less horsepower, but a better designed engine without the problem of the SOHC.
