I have a 1996 Ford Explorer, and it just started revving on the freeway at 1000 rpm 's.

When I tap on the accelerator, the winding revving stops. The temp. gauge goes up while
it is revving, and it is worse if I use any heat, flashers, blinkers, brakes etc. I am
wondering if this is a relay issue? I ask this after reading other questions, I will take your
answer to a mechanic. Thanks.

The engine will increase in RPM if there is an indication the engine is overheating, this is normal as the engine is attempting to circulate more water through the engine to cool it down. Suspect the simple and less expensive things first. Could be a thermostat stuck close or a blocked radiator. Expect these things on a vehicle approaching the age of 20. My nephew has my 96 4.0 with over 300K. It does take a little more TLC.
