2003 Hyundai sonata

my daughters battery light came on and car
was squealing. A piece popped off of the car
and it wasn't the belt.

I do not, we just got here and the lot was pitch black...part of the crank shaft pulley popped off

If part of the pulley popped off, the belt surely did, contributed to the squealing and the battery light to come on as the alternator wasn't spinning. You will have to replace the broken part.
