Car swerve, unable to control steering when cornering

Asked by Ronny Feb 27, 2017 at 09:17 AM about the 2007 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E 280 4MATIC

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was driving my Mercedes E200k avantgarde year
2007 model yesterday when while cornering on
highway, the car swerved to both left & right, it
appeared as if the front tyres nit responding to the
steering. Happened on again few minutes later on
another corner and while turning at intersection.
While this incident happened, a Hazard signal
appeared on both occasion (the triangle with
exclamation mark). Luckily no cars nearby early
morning, if I fail to control the car it could have
turned spinning.

Brought the car immediately for diagnostic check,
the mechanic said from the scan it shows faulty on
the ABS module and require replacement, which is
very costly.

My question, why is the ABS sign never appeared
while the incident occured, instead only Hazard
dangerous sign appeared?

Is the ABS module require replacement after
certain mileage? Mine is 120000km.

I dont feel safe at all driving the car if it is not fixed
anyway, so I just heed what the mechanic told me
so.

What other options are there? I hope after
replacing the ABS module, the problem is fixed.

Appreciate your advice.

Thank you.

Well, I would have gotten a second opinion. My opinion is first what was the ABS code to warrant the replacement of the ABS module? The light would have ben on, on the dashboard. So I believe there are worn steering parts in the front end, like tie rods or ball joints could have caused this.

Thank you for your view. I have asked the mechanic to also look into the tie rods, ball joints & steering part however they did not show any signs of damage/faulty, all are working well. The faulty code that appears on the diagnostic scan are as follows: Diagnostic scan Mercedes E200K AVANTGARDE MODEL w211 YEAR 2007 Fault error P201C-Self adaptation of mixture formation The mixture is too rich in the part load range (P017) P2061-Alternator serial interface, electrical fault, Alternator serial interface, electrical and mechanical fault P205C-fault is stored in component A7/3n/ (SBC control unit) Control module 193 (Central Gateway Control Unit) Accordingly, the mechanic explained that when the SBC/ ABS module faulty, it causes only one side of the brake to work when braking on cornering, hence causing the swerve/loss of control and risk of spinning. What say you?
